The Big Gulch Fire was reported after 3 p.m. on Wednesday and is burning in Moffat County to the west of Craig.

The Big Gulch Fire in Moffat County has reached 1,161 acres after being aerial mapped on Thursday, on a combination of private and public land west of Craig, according to the Moffat County Sheriff’s Office.
The fire’s cause is currently undetermined at this time, though lightning is the suspected cause. The blaze was first reported just after 3 p.m. on Wednesday and led to the extended closure of U.S. Highway 40 in both directions to the west of Craig.
The fire is burning in the area of Moffat County Roads 90 and 174W. Crews from the Moffat County Sheriff’s Office, Moffat County Road and Bridge, Bureau of Land Management, Craig Fire and aircraft are actively battling the fire. No structures are currently threatened by the fire.
The weather is expected to be partly sunny with a high of 88 degrees near Craig this afternoon, though temperature data from the Moffat County Airport is not currently available. Showers are in the forecast for tomorrow.
